Ilya Sutskever, the head scientist and co-founder of OpenAI, is departing the company in the midst of the current artificial intelligence explosion.

According to the company’s blog, Jakub Pachocki will take over as chief scientist.
Pachocki oversaw the creation of GPT-4 and OpenAI Five while she was OpenAI’s director of research. In a post on X, Sutskever stated, “I have decided to leave OpenAI after almost a decade.”
Regarding a new project he is undertaking, Sutskever mentioned on social media, “It is very personally meaningful to me, and I will share details when the time is right.”
Sutskever was a major factor in Altman’s abrupt dismissal and subsequent rehire in November of last year. Sutskever was involved in the planning of Altman’s termination while serving on the OpenAI board.
Several days later, he reversed his decision, signing a letter to the staff requesting Altman’s return and apologizing for his role in the board’s decisions. Following Altman’s reinstatement, Sutskever was dismissed from the company and removed from the board.
Sutskever left the firm the day after it announced at a Monday event that it would be releasing a new AI model dubbed GPT-4o, which can interact with texts and visuals and have realistic voice conversations.
ChatGPT quickly became known as the fastest application to exceed 100 million monthly active users soon after its launch in late 2022. However, global traffic to the ChatGPT website has seen fluctuations over the past year and is currently approaching the peak it experienced in May 2023, as reported by analytics firm Similarweb.
Ilya Sutskever is widely recognized for his extensive contributions to AI research. His personal website indicates that he held positions as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford and a researcher at Google before co-founding OpenAI. Geoffrey Hinton, a prominent figure in AI, was his supervisor at the start of his career.
