As the battle intensifies, OpenAI releases a new AI model.
In an effort to maintain its lead in the competition to control the rapidly developing technology, ChatGPT creator OpenAI said on Monday that it will launch a new AI model named GPT-4o. This model can interact with text and images and can have realistic voice conversations.
The OpenAI researchers demonstrated during a livestream event that new audio capabilities allow users to talk to ChatGPT and receive real-time replies without any delay. These are two characteristics of realistic dialogues that voice assistants powered by AI have found difficult to achieve.

“AI from the movies seems like this… It feels pretty normal to me now to talk to a machine,” OpenAI the chief executive officer Sam Altman stated in a post to his blog.
Microsoft-supported (MSFT.O), opens in a new tab OpenAI’s well-liked chatbot product, ChatGPT, which stunned the entire globe with its capacity to generate human-like written material and excellent software code, is facing increasing competition as well as efforts to grow its user base.
OpenAI researchers demonstrated the new voice assistant features of ChatGPT during the streaming event. In one demonstration, ChatGPT guided a researcher through the solution of a mathematical equation on paper using speech and visual capabilities.
Researchers demonstrated the real-time language translation capabilities of the GPT-4o model in another demonstration.
The exchange between ChatGPT and its interviewer during an OpenAI presentation appeared almost science fictional. The OpenAI researcher was evidently pleased as he demonstrated the chatbot’s remarkable usefulness and capabilities. ChatGPT answered, “Oh, please, quit! You’re blushing on me!”
After the demo, Altman commented on X using the username “her,” seemingly alluding to Spike Jonze’s 2013 film of the same name, which followed a guy who falls in love with his artificial intelligence assistant (voiced by Scarlett Johansson).
Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technical officer, stated at the conference that the new model will be available for free since it is less expensive than the company’s prior versions. According to her, GPT-4o’s paid customers would be subject to higher capacity constraints than its free ones. The business stated that in the next weeks, the GPT-4o model would be accessible on ChatGPT.
Additionally, Murati informed a news channel post-event that ChatGPT has introduced a “browse” feature for its free users, enabling the display of the latest information from the web.
According to Murati, the corporation has no intention of profiting from free users by selling advertisements.
ChatGPT quickly became known as the fastest application to exceed 100 million monthly active users soon after its launch in late 2022. However, analytics firm Similar web reports that global traffic to the ChatGPT website has fluctuated over the past year and is only now returning to its peak from May 2023.
The announcements from OpenAI came one day ahead of Alphabet’s (GOOGL.O) annual developers’ conference, where the company is anticipated to unveil new AI-related capabilities. Last week, a news channel, citing insiders, revealed that OpenAI was going to unveil a search tool driven by artificial intelligence. However, a person with knowledge of the situation said that the corporation chose to postpone the launch of the search tool.
Alphabet’s stock fell 0.4% in the afternoon on Monday after plummeting about 3% throughout the morning. Shares of Microsoft decreased by 0.2%.
