Meta to form a team to combat disinformation and AI abuse during EU elections.
In the lead-up to the June European Parliament elections, Facebook’s owner Meta (META.O) has announced that it will form a team to combat misinformation and the misuse of generative AI. The team will address issues with election meddling and false content produced by AI.
This year’s major elections around the world could be disrupted by generative AI, which is growing quickly and can produce text, images, and video in seconds when given instructions. According to some, this raises concerns.
Elections to the European Parliament are scheduled for June 6–9. New EU laws and policies are passed by its 720 lawmakers in collaboration with the EU governments.

“In light of the impending election, we intend to establish an Elections Operations Centre to promptly detect and mitigate any potential threats,” stated Marco Pancini, Meta’s chief of EU circumstances, in a blog post.
The company’s experts in operations, research, engineering, content policy, operations research, and intelligence, data science, and law will, according to him, concentrate on battling disinformation, influence operations, and the risks associated with the misuse of generative AI.
According to Pancini, Meta will be partnering with three new entities in Bulgaria, France, as well as Slovakia. Currently, Meta collaborates with 26 autonomous fact-checking organizations in 22 different languages throughout the EU.
Microsoft (MSFT.O), Meta opens new tab, OpenAI, and seventeen other tech companies came to an agreement earlier this month to collaborate in order to stop misleading AI content from meddling in elections this year throughout the world.
