However, England, who gave three players their T20 debuts and were captained for the first time by Phil Salt, produced a remarkable comeback to dismiss the tourists for 179.

The spinners had the better of it; seamers Jofra Archer as well as Saqib Mahmood each took two wickets, while Liam Livingstone took 3-22 and Adil Rashid was brilliant with 1–23. However, three wickets fell in the powerplay, putting England’s chase in jeopardy from the start.

After a 54-run partnership for the fifth the catch between Livingstone as well as Sam Curran provided them optimism, but their rapid departures exposed England’s huge tail, and they were run out by 151 in their final over.

The two Twenty20 matches will now take place on Friday in Cardiff, and on Sunday, the three-match series will come to an end at Old Trafford.

Australia’s powerplay blitz comes to an end.

Australia humiliated the England seamers from the outset, with the home crowd only sarcastically applauding when a delivery failed to reach the boundary.

Short initiated the assault with two massive sixes from Reece Topley in quick succession. Head, who was given out caught behind, reviewed and went ahead of Short with three in a row, smashing home a thirty off a Curran over.

England attempted to bowl short because of Southampton’s huge square boundaries, but they were repeatedly punished as Head sped to a 19-ball half-century, a record for Australia in T20 cricket and the quickest against the England in the competition.

Despite falling to Mahmood on the final ball of the powerplay, Australia managed to score an incredible amount. With Mitchell Marsh out of the game in his opening over, Rashid proved to be the most capable bowler for the drastically altered England team.

As England regained control, Livingstone took Rashid’s place and bowled ten consecutive overs of spin. The versatile batsman had Short stumped on the sweep with his second delivery.

The hosts quickly got back into the game when Tim David and Marcus Stoinis were both leg before wicket after consecutive deliveries, both of which were reviewed by Livingstone.

Josh Inglis held Australia’s innings together until he was bowled while attempting a reverse scoop on Curran. Archer and Mahmood then had to clean up the tail.

The tourists were unable to bat their overs after Adam Zampa was run out and two wickets were taken by Archer and Mahmood, who both just missed out on hat-tricks, thanks to three yorkers in three deliveries.

    Skilled England lost early wickets.

In the end, Australia benefited from the late collapse since England did not send out any fireworks. Although Salt was relieved to be caught off the no-ball initially up, Will Jacks’ bad luck continued as he trapped Short at the leg end during the following over.

Before the powerplay could expire, debutants Jordan Cox and Salt were dismissed, and England was down 52-4 when Zampa dismissed Jacob Bethell, who was additionally making his international debut.

While Curran and Livingstone were content to wait and attempt to rebuild, Sean Abbott managed to catch Curran at a short fine leg just as they were picking up speed. Three deliveries later, Josh Hazlewood dismissed Livingstone, who had been playing clearly for his 37 from 27 balls, and England appeared to be lost.

When Zampa, on his T20I debut, bowled Jamie Overton, the cunning batsman had to try to salvage the second half of the match for the England bowlers. They never threatened to surpass Australia’s total, even as the game entered its final over.
