Why Trump and Harris battle for Black voters in must-win Georgia?

The battle for Black voters in Georgia is heating up as Trump and Harris make their final push. Discover the high-stakes political drama unfolding in this must-win state.

In the key state of Georgia, VIVIAN Childs, a fervent admirer of Donald Trump, instructed a group of Democrats on how to prevail over Black voters.

Last month, at the previous president’s recently established office in the remote city of Valdosta, the Black Baptist preacher encouraged a gathering of volunteers along with campaign officials to focus on Trump’s monetary policies, illegal immigration, and inflation.

She urged candidates to highlight Trump’s accomplishments for them and his promise to bring about the transformation that America needs. “We identify as a group of hope,” she declared. “We are the party of truth.”

Georgia has turned into a must-win state, according to Trump, who believed he had the election secured until Kamala Harris emerged as his opponent in July.

Georgia opinion polls have the candidates tied, which is a significant change from the beginning of July when surveys had Trump ahead of Liberal Joe Biden for president by as much as six points of difference.

Out of the seven key states that will determine the outcome of the presidential election on November 5, Georgia has the highest percentage of Black voters.

Republicans’ voting restrictions, which activists claim are intended to create obstacles for people of color, have further hindered Trump’s efforts to win over more Black voters. The party disputes these allegations.

Childs, a member of the nationwide “Black People for Trump” movement, said that the Georgia election was originally impacted by Harris’s nomination. But the excitement was waning, she insisted. In the 2020 election, Trump loses to Biden by a margin of less than 12,000 votes.

According to a top Donald campaign official, the group saw significant potential in drawing in young Black males who, because of exorbitant costs, had grown weary of Democrats and believe that the former president has provided them with more economic options.

A Black woman named Essence Johnson heads the Democrat Party in the county of Cobb, which is an extensive region far from Atlanta. “It has gotten extremely heated in Georgia,” Johnson said.

Indeed, battle lines were established during Cobb County’s Pig and Peaches BBQ event. With material on student loan relief, support for historically Black colleges, and prescription price reduction, the Democratic stall attracted voters of color.

A hundred yards away, the Republican booth was stocked with literature and brochures in Spanish that addressed issues such as inflation, abortion, economic opportunity, and faith.

Previously a largely white, Republican County, its demographics have changed to include 30% Black, 14% Hispanic, and 6% Asian. This region assisted Biden in winning Georgia in 2020. Trump’s team was so sure of winning in Georgia before Biden withdrew that it was spending just over US$3 million on advertising purchases.

Following Harris’s announcement, the campaign as well as a related organization outspent the Harris team through the entire month of August by spending over US$30 million on state advertising.

As per AdImpact, a political advertising tracking company, both parties have pledged to spend about US$37 million apiece in Georgia until Election Day.

In the event that Kamala Harris takes over for Biden, what are her chances of defeating Donald Trump?

The majority of the Trump campaign’s advertisements criticize Harris, holding her responsible for rising prices, holding her accountable for individuals entering the country illegally, and labelling her as a dangerous leftist.

During Trump’s presidency in both August and September of 2019, the Black jobless rate fell to a record-low 5.3%. The rate decreased much more under Biden, reaching 4.8% in 2023.

Ads by Harris center on plans to reduce prescription medicine costs, tax big business and the very rich for paying for housing and provide tax breaks to working parents.

The campaign’s state director, Porsha White, continued, “Vice President Harris continues to work to lower expenses for our families, preserve our freedoms, and make sure anyone in Georgia can not only get by, but get ahead.”

Exit polls indicate that in Georgia during the 2020 election, Donald received roughly 11% of the Black vote. Andra Gillespie, an Emory University political science professor, stated that he may win the state if he were to receive any greater percentage in November.
